Site Under Maintenance

We are going to conduct an unscheduled site maintenance work on Popular Airsoft since we're experiencing slowdowns that are after effects of last year's issue when our website went down due to some database problems and traffic increases. We actually haven’t done any proper maintenance work for 4 years now and the site shows it.

Hopefully, we get to do some tweaking to improve site performance and lessen that 404 messages that some readers get when traffic to the site peaks each day.

Site maintenance will take place by 2200H today and normal operations will resume by 1700H of 12 January 2015. We apologise for the inconvenience.

5APCA 2nd Week Voting

A quick reminder now as the 5th Airsoft Players' Choice Awards voting period is now on its second week. The biggest online airsoft event has now taken in thousands of votes and is hungry for even more votes. Airsoft players from around the world get to choose the best of the best in the airsoft industry this week.

A quick update from our web guys gives us an overview on how the voting is just getting hotter. There are categories where the fight is just too tight that the winner may just be decided in single digits. Which categories? Our lips are sealed. ;)

This means that each and every finalist will have to work harder in getting the votes. Almost no one is having a comfortable lead as other finalists have improved on providing service and content.  It is now time for previous winners to rest of their previous years' laurels.

They better get their troops and fans moving and prizes await them.

U.S. Army Prefers A New Pistol Design Over Beretta's M9A3

$

0
Beretta M9A3 06

In our previous story, we wrote about the Beretta M9A3 pistol which is the company's proposed pistol upgrade for the U.S. Army's "Modular Handgun System". We expect this pistol to be the strongest contender given the history of the company supplying the M9 pistol series for 30 years and recently got a contract of supplying 100,000 more M9s.

However, the U.S. Army has other ideas and declined to evaluate the M9A3 pistol, preferring to search for a modern and modular pistol, and that the M9 pistol is already showing its age.

The Modular Handgun System is looking for a closed slide design and a modular grip system that can handle different hand sizes. At present the M9A3 has been redesigned to accommodate smaller hands,  but still continues the open slide design just like the previous Beretta M9s. An open slide will be prone to dust and debris which is a problem in areas where the U.S. Military is conducting heavy operations, which usually involves being in the desert.

Furthermore, the Modular Handgun System is evaluating other pistols apart from the NATO 9mm, including the .45ACP and .40S&W. But Beretta are still holding out that the U.S. Army will consider their M9A3 pistol as they're looking to supply the M9A3 to finish out their current contract and helping the Army save in millions in dollars.

But with the U.S. Army declining to evaluate the M9A3, the company has expressed their disappointment, as Gabriel De Plano, the Vice-President for Military Marketing and Sales of Beretta USA stated according to Military.com:

“Obviously, they didn’t take a whole lot of time on this,” said De Plano, reacting to the news of the Army’s pre-Christmas decision after the M9A3’s December 10 unveiling.

Army officials “didn’t ask a single question; didn’t ask for a single sample” for evaluation, De Plano said.

Will the Beretta M9A3 still be able to be part of the Modular Handgun System? That will be a tall order for the company for now as competitors are keen to meet the programs requirements with a new pistol design rather than an upgrade of an existing pistol. Will Beretta offer something else and ditch the M9A3? We'll find out soon.

A civilian version of the Beretta M9A3 pistol will be on display at the SHOT Show 2015 in Las Vegas later this month with a target of offering this by Summer of 2015.

The Tough GF Point 2015 Takes Place In Poland This Weekend

GF Point 2014

It's that time of the year again in which the airsoft world will see a unique airsoft event that takes place in winter. It is one of the few events in the world but most probably the only that happens in the dead of winter. The GF Point 2015 is a tough airsoft event which not only tests the airsoft shooting and tactical skills of competitors, it is also a tough and gruelling orienteering event that tests the stamina and will of those who dare.

This will take place this weekend, the 16th-17th of January 2015 Owl Mountains of Poland. We don't know yet what will make this GF Point different from the previous years and we are curious to know the theme for this year.

This event will bring out the best and toughest amongst Polish and other airsoft players from Europe as they expect around 300 participants. That number is impressive given that it is a low season for airsoft events in the Northern Hemisphere and many would rather play multiplayer FPS video games than have their balls frozen in the field.

Good luck to all the participants and organisers. Keep warm and stay safe!

The GFPOINT airsoft orienteering race is the only event in Poland – and one of only a few such events in the world – combining airsoft activities with orienteering (the so-called foot-O). Such an event allows to check the participant's general fitness, and navigation skills, as well as his knowledge and expertise in matters of general defense, military and survival, all that combined with more than just a slight touch of airsoft.

The event's military character is defined by the requirements the participants must meet in terms of clothing and gear, as well as the type of task which need to be completed during the run, which include – but are not restricted to – a shooting range, killing house, general military knowledge test, etc.

This year we have decided to set the limit at 300 participants, with an additional 200 staff and volunteers. Bringing together airsofters, military enthusiasts, security, law enforcement and military officers, mountaineers, tourists and foot-O oriented sportsmen.

In the upcoming 6th edition which will be taking place on January 17th 2015, the participants will once again face each other in the incredibly scenic areas of the Owl Mountains the oldest mountain range in Poland. Aside from the beautiful wild landscapes and very demanding routes, the area is covered with numerous objects, facilities and underground tunnels from the times of world war II, which seriously affect the incredible atmosphere of this event. The route will run, among others, through the tunnels of a post-Nazi complex of underground facilities in Włodarz.

Flying A Drone In The Philippines? Get A Licence First

$

DJI Inspire 1 Camera Drone

In what soon be a a bureaucratic feature around the world, drone operators will need to get licenses in order to operate  them. As we have been cautioning before, as camera drones become more affordable, even more will be up in the air and can cause hazards to commercial aircraft above and to the crowded populations below.

In the Philippines, if you do not get a licence to operate one, you will face a very stiff penalty. Those who plan to cover airsoft events in the Philippines with camera drones should consider getting one.

According to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, owners are required to register their drones with the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), before they can fly them. If they are caught flying unlicensed drones, they will receive a penalty between PHP300,000 to PHP500,000 (US$6,700 to US$11,200).

CAAP Deputy Director for Operations Gen. Rodante Joya says that, "They cannot fly drones over congregations of people, on busy streets, near government buildings and installations, especially within airports due to safety concerns." Which is a reflection of safety authorities worldwide as more and more drones go up in the air.

In cases of important events, only media practitioners are allowed to fly drones, which of course should also be licensed.

The Philippine government is imposing a no-drone policy throughout the visit of Pope Francis which is ongoing as of this writing.

Featured Review: Can The RWA Nighthawk Custom GRP Justify Its Price?

Feature Review: RWA Nighthawk Custom GRP

In early December 2015, we broke the story of RWA releasing what they claim to be the most realistic airsoft pistol ever --- the RWA Nighthawk Custom GRP Steel Version. Indeed, it  is a premium 1911 airsoft pistol that comes with a jaw-dropping price of US$1,280.00. However, this pistol is not alone in the rarefied air of expensive and premium airsoft pistols, there is Inokatsu and of course, the custom works from the Airsoft Surgeon. If we are to shell out our hard-earned money for this, what does RWA offer us to justify its price tag?

Our go to guy for giving us some of the most meticulous and long reviews in airsoft, Dom who is based in Hungary, was tapped by RWA to give it an unbiased review. He is mightily impressed by the packaging and build quality of the pistol and of course lucky to be allowed to break down something that is on a limited run.

He went even further than looking at compatible and comparable airsoft pistols or looking at high resolution photos of the real deal, he actually went to a range to compare it with real steel 1911 pistols to find out their owner reactions on the RWA Nighthawk Custom GRP to confirm if it is indeed the "most realistic airsoft pistol".

The review is studded with many photos comparing with real steel 1911 pistols (the Turkish Tisas Zig M 1911 and American Remington Model 1911 R1 Enhanced), so please do bear with us if loading the page will be slow. The review itself has 54 images and one video, which means you won't be disappointed in comparing the fine details of the pistol (you can view higher resolution versions of the photos at the Popular Airsoft Facebook Page). If you do not have a budget to buy one and do not know of anyone who owns one of the limited run, then this review may be closest you will have to understand and appreciate the efforts and workmanship that RWA has put into this product.

I guess I have said too much to make an introduction to the review. It's really best to let Dom tell you more about the pistol and why he is convinced that RWA is justified with the pricing of the RWA Nighthawk Custom GRP.

AMSTV SHOT SHOW 2015 Media Range Day

It's the SHOT Show 2015 Week, where firearms and airsoft enthusiast converge in Las Vegas to check out the latest in firearms and airsoft industries. One of the "must attend" events for the airsoft media, we are expecting a stream of reports and videos from the various airsoft channels and vendors that we usually follow.

The SHOT Show 2015 does some preliminaries before officially opening with the Media and Industry Day at the Range, which took place yesterday. The Media Day starts in the morning with the Industry where accredited media representatives can check what they can hold and shoot at the range and by noon time, industry representatives will also mingle with the rest together with the media.

Airsoft Megastore TV is the first  out to report of the Day at the Range with Red Mckenzie showing us the various firearms he shot at the range. He starts with the KRISS Vector, and going through the various firearms of manufactures, but we are keen on two from KEL-TEC, the RFB, and the CMR-30 which Red also tried. The video below shows more:

Whilst we are waiting for reports from other airsoft channels and vendors who are prolific in putting out video reports, we searched YouTube to pick a selection of videos taken at Day At The Range of products that you might want to have airsoft versions such as the HK VP9 9mm, Glock G40 Gen4 MOS, IWI Tavor SAR IDF, Springfield Armory XD Mod.2, and the Springfield Armory RO Compact.

The next phase for our SHOT Show 2015 reportage? It's going to be on the Exhibit Floor at the Sands Expo Center as the SHOT Show 2015 officially opens today. So if you have reports, sightings, and videos taken from the floor, just send it our way, and we guarantee eyeballs for it.

Airsoftology ASG Booth Live! - SHOT Show 2015

There are just too many videos to choose from at the SHOT Show 2015 that we decided to focus on initial reports from Airsoftology and HotSpot Airsoft. Somewhere in Jonathan Higg's video at the ASG booth are the guys from Fox Airsoft so we shall be expecting their videos too as they are prolific in making their reports from the airsoft market. We are also seeing photos from Airsoft GI so we hope to see more of their videos too.

The Bren 805 has been announced by ASG on Facebook by the way and we'll report about that later on.

Apart from their reports, we made some "choice pickings" in the video list that YouTube sent our way. This is mainly more about the brands that are already in the airsoft market, either directly or through licensing agreements with airsoft manufacturers (the Ruger 10/22 conversion kit should make KJWKC-02 owners happy if it becomes available for the airsoft market) . The names that we have for today are Magpul, Mega Arms, Stag Arms,  Battle Arms Development, and Primary Weapons Systems. Still there are more than meets the eye as we go through the videos of the first day of the SHOT Show 2015. Let's' start watching them below:

SHOT Show 2015: AMSTV At ASG & KWA, Videos From Fox Airsoft & More

AMSTV SHOT Show 2015 KWA

Airsoft Megastore's Red Mckenzie is just busy going around visiting booths of various airsoft manufacturers since the past two days and the latest uploads from AMSTV are the KWA CQR Mod. 1 DE and the prototype of the Action Sport Games (ASG) CZ Bren 805 AEG. A revelation in the video is that there will be two variants of the 805 that will be released --- the A1 and A2, and in the video the A2 is displayed.

Red also got hold of Airsoftology's Jonathan Higgs, who is also busy as hell visiting the various booths and they reveal that Airsoft Megastore is now a sponsor of his channel.

The ASG booth was visited as well by the Fox Airsoft guys which apart from the 805, also have another product called the TAC-6 (Tactical Adaptive Carbine) which is a CO2 powered, and a new revolver, the Dan Wesson 715 which is based on the Dan Wesson 715 .357 Magnum. They also checked out They also checked the Umarex Booth where we can find most of the licensed H&K airsoft guns and their new T4E or the Training for Engagement line. Their third video from yesterday was about the new Pro Arms MK3 (PAR MK3) airsoft guns made under license by ICS and they give us a close look at the AEG.

With the airsoft side reported, we also checked some interesting videos of real steel products that we hope would have airsoft licenses in the following months or years. The Sharps Rifle Company SRC 25-45 and what the SHOT Show organisers call "the SSAR-15 MOD, an improved version of the original SSAR-15 based on customer feedback and the AK Hybrid that allows the use of an AR-15 style stock and pistol grip on the AK platform" from Slide Fire. A SHOT Show visit is incomplete without a visit to the SIG SAUER and GLOCK display areas, so a video is also posted here.

Larry Vickers is also busy going around and showing us the Lipsey's Vicker's Signature Glock 17 & 19 RTF2. As for rifles he checkes out the LE6290-OEM1 & the LE6920-OEM2 AR Models from Colt.

Surefire actually released their 2015 new products video which is posted in our news section today and Going Gear actually visited their booth to check them out:

We'll try to post whatever we missed on the second day of the SHOT Show 2015 in our news section later in the day.

SHOT Show 2015: AMSTV At Krytac, Airsoftology Reports, ASGI & The Can Cannon

SHOT Show 2015 AMSTV Krytac LMG

Today is mainly more about Krytac as we have two separate videos showing their display area at the ongoing SHOT Show 2015 as we go into the fourth day. Airsoft Megastore has been on the dot giving us a feed on their latest videos from the floor. Red Mckenzie gets hold of the dashing and famous Tim of KRISS-Krytac USA to talk about the Krytac Trident LMG, the biggest in the Krytac Trident family (for now).

And Bob The Axeman of Airsoft GI gets more information from his former colleague as they talk about the Krytac Trident CRD cerakoted in tan,  the .22 LVOA rifle which an AEG will also be made. They also went over the Defiant Barrel Extensions and other weapons accessories for the Krytac line-up.

Jonathan Higgs of Airsoftology as much busy on the floor and has fed two more videos on YouTube. One video is his visit to the PTS Syndicate Booth where they talked about their products for 2015 including a PDR-D and a Masada Gas Blowback Rifle. The next video is his visit to the Valken Tactical Booth where he features their high powered AR-1 HPA-powered airsoft gun which will be released this year.

Speaking of HPA-powered airsofft guns. Bob went to visit he PolarStar Airsoft area, the company which re-ignited the HPA segment of airsoft. They talk about the venture with Elite Force guns to provide HPA-equipped airsoft guns powered by their F1 engine.

We have another video of the KWA booth at the SHOT Show and this one was uploaded on YouTube by the Late Boy Scout. He gets Jim to talk about the various products on display.

In terms of real steel, here is another video from Larry Vickers of Vickers Tacticalwhere asks Jason Young of Red State Tactical to talk about the new 1911 from Wilson Combat and BCM, which comes complete with new grips from VZ Grips.

We have been following IraqiVeteran8888 for this SHOT Show as he has been uploading interesting videos. His latest SHOT Show videos are about the Giessele/ALG Defense AK triggers as well as the new Trigger Bow for the Tavor and what interested us most in his videos is the X-Products Can Cannon which looks like a fun product to use.

Other SHOT Show 2015 3rd day videos and news will be posted in the news section later in the day.

AMSTV Polar Star Fusion F1 Drop in HPA System Shot Show 2015

We report on the Day 4 videos and indeed Airsoft Megastore still has more videos to feed us and keep us engaged as we update ourselves on what's new and what's up in the airsoft industry at the SHOT Show 2015 which ended yesterday, the 23rd of January 2015. Red Mckenzie still had the energy to go around and bring us some reports that will interest our readers.

We all have heard about the cooperation between PolarStar Airsoft and Elite Force/Umarex. This means that complete airsoft guns of HPA-powered airsoft guns will be out on the market that will be powered by the Polar Star Fusion F1 Drop in HPA System. PolarStar has been cooperating with VFC on complete ones, and with the cooperation of Umarex and VFC, this new agreement is not at all surprising.

Since we have mentioned about Elite Force, Red gets hold of Vince Mann a former face of Airsoft Megastore and now working with Elite Force.  They discuss about the Elite Force G36 series that come with programmable MOSFETS. He also follows through with another video taken from the KWA booth, and this features the new KWA AKG KCR Gas Blowback Rifle. We don’t know if the ZShot booth visit is the last in the Airsoft Megastore videos from the SHOT Show, but here he presents us the Ares Airsoft Amoeba Modular Handguard System.

We have been looking forward to video reports from Airsoft Obsessed, and they didn’t disappoint as the Tominator, as Tom Harris is known in the airsoft community, visits the G&G Armament Booth.  The first one is the discussion of the new M1 Garand AEG, which is the second M1 Garand AEG offering in the market, right  after the ICS M1 Garand AEG. Together with Rick of G&G, they go over the DSG/High Speed Set Up which for those who are looking for high ROF setups, then they might to check these out.  To top off his G&G visit, they present the new versions of the popular and affordable Combat Machines.

The Tominator also visited the Jag Precision booth, and checks the much vaunted E&L Airsoft AK line-up. For those looking for airsoft AKs that will go a long long way in terms of durability like the real AK, then the E&L Airsoft AKs are the go to AEGs. He also checks the booth of Code Red Headsets, the popular radio comms store amongst airsoft players in the U.S.

Airsoft GI uploaded a video giving us a rundown of their interviews with other airsoft manufacturers and vendors some of the videos we have already posted here. But expect more from them post SHOT Show 2015 as they have interviews with KWA, Krytac, Elite Force, G&G, ASG, Condor Outdoor, Polarstar, Palco Sports, ZSHOT, Spartan Imports, Jag Precision, Valken, and more.

In the real steel area, we see Larry Vickers of Vickers Tactical visit the Surefire exhibit area as goes over the latest products apart from the usual line of tactical lights, which means the SOCOM Suppressors, Flash Hider, Blast Diverter, and the new XC1.  He also visits the Mile High booth to discuss the Wilson Combat .308 RECON in the AR-10 format.

To end our SHOT Show 2015 Week Feature, here is a video from LWRC, showing their new firearms line-up. We have been looking forward to getting more LWRC in the airsoft market, but it seems to have slowed down to a halt. If representatives from Classic Army are reading this, it's time to put out new LWRC AEGs.

But this is not the last of the SHOT Show 2015 reports, as we expect more to come in the following two or three weeks as others still have to process their photos and videos taken from the show. Expect more in our news section.

5APCA Vote Reminder Week 4

Are you still making your list of finalists to vote for the 5th Airsoft Players' Choice Awards? You've got a week left to make up your mind. As we have mentioned last week, the battle to be the best will go down the wire in certain categories. For the finalists, this means they've got 7 days left to appeal to our readers and their fans to vote for them.

We can't say more except good luck to all the finalists. They can cajole all their followers who haven't voted for them to do so now and for those who already have cast their votes to invite others to vote for their favourites. Each vote will matter. Each vote will count. This is about prestige and honour of being voted as the best in the biggest online airsoft event.

For the voters, fantastic prizes await the raffle winners as seen in the photo above and more photos of the prizes further down this page.

Well, talking about the prestige, whilst we'll not be having the glitz, glitter and glamour of other wards, we also have our awards ceremony which we shall confirm later on if it can take place again this year. Just like in previous years, the winners are to receive their awards during the Airsoft Meetup at the IWA & Outdoor Classics 2015. We'll just have to confirm with NLAirsoft.com and if we are a go this year.

But what is important now is that the votes for the most deserving should be cast. VOTE NOW!

One Grunt's Opinion: Fat Guys In Airsoft/Milsim

$
0
0
Darkhorse At Milsim Game

Here's a controversial topic to wrap your brain around. Social evolution, the media, and your doctor all say it's bad to be fat. Today in society, you have a fight being lead to change the negative image of what it means to be fat in society. I'm not here to tell you to embrace the curves and see the beauty, I won't bore you with that crap. I will keep it simple, I/we need to get in shape. Not to look more operator or to meet society's standard. But to show what the determination of a fat guy can do once aligned with the right kind of fitness. Not skinny or small but fit because small doesn't equal fit.

First, a little back ground on the subject. I played sports as a kid and we all know the standard the Army expects in the physical fitness of an infantryman. I've never been a skinny, little stick and never really wanted to be. Nowadays, I'm the poster boy for roundness and how bad it is. A combination of combat injuries, bad medical advice and good food got me to the round proportions I now flaunt. I also play airsoft so, I'm almost a walking cliché. Like many I've reached that point where I'm just not going to keep on this path. I especially know what it's like to be in awesome shape and combat effective.

I'm sure more than a few of you out there are reaching similar points in your life. Call it a new life course, a shift in lifestyle or a simple New Year resolution. Hopefully reading this, helps strengthen the likelihood of both our success. So let's look at fat guys in airsoft. Face the truth and look at the mistakes being made by the skinny and round alike.

The military demands a fit and capable soldier with the physical capability to endure on his or her mission for their country. You're physical fitness can mean the difference between life and death. It can mean the difference between accomplishing a mission or failing. So the military is not and cannot be sympathetic to the plight of the fat man. With airsoft's attempt to mirror military society, this feeling translates right over to many that play.

Athleticism in our society and the ideal image of the physically fit pushes against the fat man, too. We see lean, fast, athletic people and we equate a winner in general society. Every rule has its exception and I could sit here and tell you about many strong men or the sumo but we need to acknowledge the most common social notion. So it's a lot of pressure to fit into the mold and a lot hate for those that do not fit the ideal model. Whether athlete or operator we have an image. This image has to be met or you just don't qualify in the club.

Talk about a tough uphill battle for guys like me. You'll either need some tough, broad shoulders that just don't give a crap. Or, you'll have to hit the gym if you can't stand to be looked down at anymore.

If you're round be ready to be short of breath sooner, probably slower, and just a bigger target. I say become smarter, more skilled and willing to push farther. If you approach the field of battle this way you start to balance the weaknesses and find change in your ordinary life too. To many die hard players, airsoft part of daily life, so the attitude and philosophy on the field can have an impact on the mundane parts of everyday life.

(Round airsoft player that has become an internet meme. Original source unknown)

How do you become the smart, fat guy??? You study and understand warfare. Because the mind develops the strategy and finds clarity, while others are lost in the fog of war. You can know what a flank is but understanding its importance and how to exploit it is another thing. So be smart and then you can focus your energy much more wisely.

How do you become the skilled fat guy??? Training and experience, training and experience. No one was born a skilled shooter, no one was born a master of chaos. Watching videos and hoping the knowledge soaks in is not going to make you any better. Now here come the guys saying I'm my teams support gunner or DMR guy so I don't have to be fast. You're settling in your training for the least strenuous option. Skill comes from learning all the roles and maximizing your potential. I know guys will say that's just as hard if not harder work then simply being a rifle man. But I've seen way too many fat guys that settle because they think it'll keep them from having to push as hard on the field.

How do you become more willing to push harder? That is something that can't be taught. You have to find that within yourself or resolve yourself to being the fat slow guy in the back. I've yet to meet an Airsofter that didn't have the drive or desire in them, even if they don't show it that well. Everyone wants to win, everyone wants that hero moment where they overcome an enemy to capture an objective. So believe it or not, you have that drive to go farther. Strange enough I don't know anyone who wouldn't respect you for driving on an assault even if at the end you puke your brain out. Commitment and strength of heart define you and your desire to succeed.

Now it's not all about self-improvement and bringing yourself up to society's tough standards. That is just a fact of life and a big part of the puzzle. My big bone to pick is the underestimating of those guys that don't fit your perfect operator image. Hating on a fat guy in airsoft is like hating on a fat guy at the gym. He or she is out there physically active and clearly putting effort into the problem.

"Oh my god his gut is hanging out in the pic of him wearing all that high speed gear".

"What a slob and bad image for the sport."

"Well, where is your beard baby face, can't be operator if you don't have it and look like you couldn't lift a gallon of milk with those stick arms?"

"The fat guy needs to find XXL uniforms, and you need extra smalls that they make in limited quantity for girls. Easy to see weakness and flaw."

What if you spend time talking to that fat guy and you find out he was a Ranger or a member of Special Forces before??? How quickly would your tune change and your view of the same person change??? Because hero worship of their accomplishments would win out, right??? You still don't respect or care for him really. You only care about the credentials and what you know about that. But until you learn those things you would continue to underestimate your opponent.

Now some of you will say you don't judge or underestimate people on the field no matter their size. I bet you don't hold it against them but you do judge and expect less. Why wouldn't you??? You should be assessing your friends and foes. It's part of the planning and decision making process. Push those guys and force them into the front of the fight.

This isn't a happy let's hold hands kind of world. Especially not airsoft full of its hard-asses and pretend hard-asses. If you're fat like me then personal improvement is what you should work on because nothing says kiss my ass better than running over your enemy on an objective. Personal improvement because being unhealthy in a way that can shorten your life is never good. Those of you casting hate and judgment on the fat man at the game are simply missing the most important aspect of the warrior kit. That's the part you can't buy online and make look good in a picture. If you don't know what that is then you should start searching.

Just one fat grunt's opinion,

Javier "Darkhorse"

ZeroHour Relic XR: A Tactical Flashlight That Also Charges Mobile Devices

ZeroHour Relic XR

These days, we are seeing more people carrying powerbanks. These are portable battery chargers that charge different portable devices via USB. They range from simple lipstick-type ones, to bigger ones that can even charge a laptop. With more people relying on their portable devices for everyday purposes, powerbanks have become big business. Even, OptimusPrime carries one with him so he can check his Facebook page anytime, anywhere without worrying that his mobile device runs out of batteries.

Thus, we highly recommend powerbanks to be in the list of "must have" devices for airsoft players. Powerbanks become indispensable in the field since we always play in area where there is no direct access to electricity. We'll need to charge our mobile phones and tablets in the field too so we can communicate and navigate. It's just a matter of another extra, but necessary weight that will be added to any airsofter's load.

But with the ZeroHour Relic XR Tactical USB Flashlight, a  Powerbank also has an immediate tactical purpose.

The ZeroHour Relic XR project was put up on Kickstarter for crowdfunding and within 16 hours, it blew past its required funding of US$25,000. With just 8 days to go, it has already raised over US$170,000 with over a thousand backers.

So what does the ZeroHour Relic XR do? It's really a very straightforward thing. We have seen certain powerbank models come with a LED lights to so they can also serve as flashlights. The founders of ZeroHour Innovations, Amy Truong and Aaron Son, took that concept and improved on it further. The ZeroHour Relic XR "is a compact USB rechargeable tactical flashlight with variable control ring, tail-cap switch, and waterproof battery backup all-in-one."

What they also mentioned is that it is also weapon mountable so you can also use it as a weapon light. A very useful gadget indeed, the ZeroHour Relic XR can be used for airsoft games so all you need is a light mount for your rifle to use it.

Now, if you need to charge your iPhone or Android phone, the ZeroHour Relic XR has a 3400mAh lithium-ion battery so you can give a full charge to your mobile phone via Micro-USB.

In terms of brightness, it can have a 1,000 lumen output with the Cree XLamp XP-L LED. But you can control the brightness with a variable ring so you can choose the light output from 0 to 1,000. It also has presets: 10 lumens, 1000 lumens, Strobe, and SOS.

Here is the full feature list:

  • USB battery backup (3400mAh capacity)
  • Click-type tail-cap switch
  • Mode Selector Ring (adjustable 0 to 1000 lumens)
  • Dual-output mode with momentary-on
  • Strobe and SOS settings
  • CREE XP-L LED emitter
  • Compatible with 2 x CR123, 2 x rechargeable CR123, or 1 x protected 18650 rechargeable battery
  • IPX-8 Waterproof 1 meter (3 ft.)
  • Removable stainless steel head and tail bezel
  • Large tail-cap holes for paracord support
  • LED battery indicator
  • Deep grooves for enhanced gripping
  • MIL-A-8625, Type III, Hard-anodized
  • Micro-USB rechargeable
  • Serial Number for Product Registration/Warranty

So there you have it, a taclight that does more than illuminating the path ahead for you and your team. It can also be a useful charging device for your communications devices. Let's hope that this gets into full production as soon as they get the funding from KickStarter. Interested dealers may need to line-up if they want to resell this product.

RedWolf Airsoft UK To Host The Airsoft Showcase In May 2015

RedWolf Airsoft UK Airsoft Showcase The Mall

RedWolf Airsoft UK's Chris Kong got in touch with us yesterday to give us a heads-up on their upcoming Airsoft Showcase 2015. This will be the first of Airsoft Showcase that aims to bring various airsoft retailers, airsoft site operators, and airsoft players, under one roof, literally since it will be held at "The Mall" in Reading, Berkshire.

"The Mall", which is managed by Zed Adventures, is the only airsoft site that is located in an abandoned shopping mall. What's more, it's within the city centre and airsoft players who plan to go to the Airsoft Showcase can just take the train to Reading where The Mall, known locally as the "Friars Walk", is just a short walk from the train station, making it a very convenient airsoft skirmish site to visit.

The details are still being finalised, but most definitely that it will take place on the 17th of May 2015 and you can join the Airsoft Showcase On Facebook to get the latest updates. We'll let Chris Kong tell you more about it:

Dear Airsoft Retailer/Site Operator/Airsoft Players:

To keep promoting our sport, I am organising a one day airsoft exhibition for all Retailers, Site Operators and Players on Sunday 17th May at The Mall in Reading.

If you have not been to The Mall in Reading before, it’s exactly what it says on a tin, it’s a BIG empty shopping mall right in the center of Reading.

This show is all about bringing us together and promoting “Airsoft” together. Combining our experience and passion for the hobby, will definitely strengthen our recognition in the fast growing airsoft industry.

For "Retailers" this is a great opportunity to showcase your new shiny toys.
For "Site Operators" now's your chance to promote your game sites.
For "Players" why not sell your pre-owned kits?

On top of the Showcase, there is a brand new walk-on game literally next door to The Mall. Now, how’s that for an Airsoft day out?

For Airsoft Retailers, Site Operators and Players interested in booking a STAND at the show please contact chris.kong-at-redwolfairsoft.com.

Advanced tickets for the Airsoft Showcase will be available shortly through RedWolf UK website at uk.redwolfairsoft.com.

The entrance tickets are:

8 - 14 years old           £5
15 years old - Adult     £8

Information on the “Walk-on game” at "The Mall: Annex"

'Annex' is a new site situated right next door to the award winning Zed Adventures 'The Mall' in Reading and is ran by the same team. This is a CQB site that consists of a very large 5 level office block with multiple stairwells and extremely varied layout. We'll be running games through the entire day of the Showcase and players are welcome to book time slots of an hour in which to play. Walk on slots will be available through the entire day but will be limited to ensure good game balance. These slots will be on a first come, first served basis so players may have to queue for a period to get a slot at busy times. A test range and chrono area will be available for those who want to have a play with any new toys while you wait. The price per player is £10 for a one hour slot. More information and booking system will be live nearer the time of the event. www.zedadventures.co.uk.

Dark Energy Poseidon: The First Military Grade & Waterproof Powerbank

Dark Energy Poseidon Powerbank

Last Wednesday, I wrote about the ZeroHour Relic XR which is a tactical flashlight that can also charge mobile devices. Whilst it's winding down, having blown past its original funding goals on Kickstarter, here is another Kickstarter project that can provide the power needs of mobile devices that we bring to the field.

Called the Poseidon, the company behind it, Dark Energy, have also reached their intended fund raising goal and have set some goal posts of adding more features to product. Poseidon is a Powerbank project that the developers say is the first military grade and waterproof powerbank. If you're looking for something to bring to the outdoors, or to an airsoft event to charge your mobile devices and other devices charged via USB, then Poseidon is the Powerbank that you will need.

With 8000mah capacity, it's compact and lightweight and is also rated as meeting the IP68 standard which makes it waterproof and dustproof. In terms of durability it is military-grade standard of MIL-STD 810G which also makes it shockproof so it will take on drops or even more punishment like shown in this video:

Though Optimus Prime thinks the power capacity of 8000mah is a bit underwhelming since he carries with him a 15000mah powerbank that also looks rugged enough though not rated the same as the Poseidon. It is also way cheaper at US$40 as the Poseidon is US$89. Both can charge two devices at the same time. What he uses has two USB ports (2.1A max and 2.4A max) whilst the Poseidon has two 2.1A USB ports.

Still for a powerbank that can take the punishment of the rugged outdoors and charge two devices at the same time, including your GoPro Action Cam, the Poseidon is also something that can be recommended to be in the list of an airsoft player. Powerbanks are becoming indispensable tools in this interconnected world as we rarely go out without our smartphones or tablets these days. This means airsoft players can always check their bloody Facebook accounts anytime even in areas where there's no power outlet to charge their iPhones or Androids. That's progress for you.

Geco Mark II Action Cam - A Glass Mounted HD Camera

Geco Mark II HD Action Cam

Many say that the best things in life are the simple things. I do agree with such and add "small" to these will just make them the "bestest" (though we also love big and complex things like tanks and jet fighters).  I always like handy devices that I can carry with me everyday that I can easily install and just forget about them while they do their thing.

The Geco Mark II Action Cam can be just one of those things.

As more and more companies are crowding the action camera market, which makes it even better for us airsoft players for us as we have more choices than ever, Geco approaches the market with a simple concept. Make it small enough and can be readily attached to any glass.  This means that you can put it in your pocket when you don't need it and when there's a scene worth taking a video footage, pull it out, quickly install it to your glasses, press the record button, and you get to record HD video hands free.

Whether you are in the airsoft field or in city streets, Geco can be useful and can be brought along everyday. Just don’t overdo taking videos of everyone and everything you see that you'll look creepy just like those Google Glass users (thankfully, it really never got widespread acceptance even if it's a neat concept).

What Geco did was design a unique mounting system so it can be attached to any glass. The designers also created a waterproof case so it can be used under water. It weighs 20 grams so it won't put a strain on glass frames. For ballistic glasses, they got more durable frames so attaching a Geco Mark II Action Cam to one won’t be a problem.

For such a small camera body, it can record 60 frames per second at 720 and a 30 frames per second at 1080p.  The battery can allow one to record for one hour on 720p and 45 minutes on 1080p.  For storage, it can take in a Class 4 or better Micro SD Card.

I like the idea that it's an everyday use action camera, if I wear glasses all the time. In the airsoft field or any event where you need to wear eye protection, then it's not a problem. But in the streets, for those who are not wearing prescription eyewear or sunglasses, then it's better just to use the HD cameras in smartphones that we carry all the time.

The Geco Mark II Action Cam is on pre-order at US$173 though we don’t know if this U.S. price or the price from South Africa where Geco is located which you may need to factor in shipping costs.  For an action camera that can be attached to any type of glasses, the Geco sounds like a good proposition.
